A Look Back – How To Run

A Look Back 11 11 Comments

For these “Look Back” series of posts I’m going to be sharing some content from Treasure Adventure Game and the early development of TAW.

Today we have some of the work Christine did to recreate the running animation from TAG.

You should make it an option to use the rough draft as your skin.

I dunno. I suppose it’s a bit late to complain about it, but from the demo I played, I think the new running animation isn’t as good as the original.

For one, look at how he’s leaning forward in the original. Running with determination!
In the second, he’s kind of bending backwards. It just looks strange.

Also, in the new one; look at his arms. It looks like he’s trying to lift a set of imaginary weights.

Thanks for your comment. You aren’t the only person to mention that the running animation looks “off”. I probably shouldn’t have called that the “Final Animation” but rather the “Current Animation”. There’s still plenty of time for us to look at revising it, and we will do just that.

        Glad to know that.

Also you better put in that dancing animation near the jukebox

Also yeah I agree with Timotheu- I like the chunky look of the pixel art.

This looks really janky. The hair doesn’t move right, just slides around on the head and the legs are very jerky.

Seems like a lot of people don’t like the new art. The reason why.. is that the art of the original game was charming and pleasing.

The new art is just.. not that at all.

The game will probably be better. But it will suffer massively for the art. Both the art style and the specific art.

Also, I just want to mention, that the captcha for this post is saying: “6 + six =”

I guess 12 is not a human answer? I’m going to try 66.

    Nope.

Now I’m going to try 6.

    Nope.

Now I’m going to try 6six – oh wait it only accepts two characters.

    I’ll try 12 again.

Now I’m going to refresh the page, hoping this is just bad web design and it’ll generate a new captcha.

Nope. Same captcha. And 12 is still wrong.

So I left. Went to another article. Solved that captcha. Returned here and finally I have a new one.

Let’s see if this piece of crap works now.

Oh and for the record, I will definitely not be buying this game now. And it’s not just because of the captcha. It’s because of the art and the captcha. Art alone, I would have bought it.

    That’s kinda harsh, Dave

The animation is okay-ish, it’s just that the new art style is not as thought-provoking as pixelart, so we don’t get to fill in the missing details using imagination.

      Thanks for all your feedback!

I understand that a lot of people love pixel-art and for them the original game will always be available.

We chose this art style for a couple of reasons. One, we love colorful cartoon-style art in games. Spelunky, Aquaria, Braid, A Boy and His Blob are some games we’ve taken inspiration from.   Second, we want the game to appeal to people of all ages, including those young enough to not have a nostalgic-love of pixel art like we do.

Third, this is honestly how I always wanted the game to look. I chose the pixel art style not out of artistic choice, but because it was the only kind of art I was capable of doing myself. Those who love the pixel art in TAG should be thankful I’m not a a more skilled artist, or had the resources to hire someone to do the art.

The main problem I have with the new art is with the protagonist’s legs. It looks like he has two peg-legs at first glance.
Perhaps if you made his feet a little bigger?

Also, is there a reason he was bald in the original, but has a full head of hair in the remake?

Seems like the issue of whether you like the change in the character design is a moot point now that you can also choose the original. I do like the original bald design better, but the images of him I’ve seen done in the new style also look good to me.
